This weekend, I celebrated finishing writing the fifth 5fingers novel - 5fingers: freedom - into the light - which is the last chapter in the series, out spring 2018. When you finish a book, you go through a huge range of emotions. More about that later. First, do you want to know how I celebrated over the weekend?
It was pretty low-key, to be honest. On Friday night I listened to this old live version of Prince playing Purple Rain - a couple of times. I’m not a mega-fan, but I love his panache and guitar soloing. Then, I played some more loud music and made home-made pizzas for my wife, three kids and a good friend. My soundtrack was Foo Fighters’ Run, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird and some old Guns n Roses. We celebrated more over the weekend with sleep; salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast, chicken fajitas and a chilled bottle of Prosecco; and a massive game of Risk with my boys that spanned Saturday and Sunday. Family, friends, food, music and games. Perfect. In terms of the emotions, writing 5fingers has constituted the last 11 years of my life. I don’t mind admitting I cried when I finished. Writing is emotional - you carry a universe in your head; not to mention all the plot, locations, dialogue, continuity, emotional responses of the characters, and the style, culture and worldview. So much going on. Now, it’s time to edit book 5; and then we embark on a two-year world book tour. If you haven’t already, why not catch up on the 4 books in the series already published, (paperback or ebooks available) and be ready for the launch of the final instalment in the Spring of 2018. My publisher will be offering tickets to the launch party which, going by the last book launch she did for me, will have flowing drinks, great nibbles, live music and me reading excerpts from the series of 5 books! 5fingers is a five-book series of fast-paced. supernatural adventure thrillers. They are written for adult and YA readers. They can be read in order or standalone, but the story does flow from one book to the next. The books feature suspense, fantasy and adventure elements and are dystopian from the third book. They're cinematic and strongly plot driven, with cliff-hangers, twists, exotic locations, snappy dialogue and intriguing characters. Who are the main characters? The stories centre on Rachel Race, a troubled 16-year-old loner, and trainee reporter Lake Emerson, who stumble upon a demonic scheme to destroy humanity. Other characters include mystical adventurer Caleb Noble, Benson Steel, a hard-nosed businessman and a dark force known as Samyaza. What themes are covered in the 5fingers books? The series explores themes of blackmail, betrayal, isolation, terrorism and loss, as well as hope, freedom, faith and friendship. There is a healthy dose of adventure and a strong theme of good overcoming evil. Where does the 5fingers story take place? The plot spans the globe, taking place in the UK, Nepal, Eastern Europe, New York, Bolivia, Tanzania and China, with the action overflowing into the Mezzanine: a spectacular world with shape-shifters and spawners, where angels and demons war against each other. Who are your favourite characters? I love Caleb Noble, a mystical adventurer who used to be an international pilot. Lake Emerson is another favourite – he’s a fast, talking, wise-cracking teenage roller blader who’s training to be a journalist. I also love the character of Rachel Race, who you meet in chapter one, and follow her through the series. She’s broken but strong, and very deep waters. I just know you'll love her.
